Yohimbe Side Effects

Yohimbe cream has been the subject of much recent controversy, as experts are discovering some very serious side effects that make the use of this herbal extract quite dangerous.

What is it?

The herb comes from the inner bark of a tropical tree native to West Africa. It has been used for many centuries for various medicinal purposes.

Today yohimbe cream and tablets are used as sexual enhancement products. Specifically they are used to treat erectile dysfunction and stimulate the desire for sex.

The active ingredient of yohimbe is an alkaloid called yohimbine. Although this compound only makes up less than 10% of the herb, it is the only component that appears to have any therapeutic benefits. Yohimbe and yohimbine are used interchangeably to describe these products.

Yohimbe Side Effects

We do not recommend the use of yohimbe products due to the fact that there is not much evidence pointing towards its effectiveness in treating sexual problems, and that fact that there can be some very serious yohimbe side effects.

Renal failure, seizures and death from yohimbe products are some of the very serious yohimbine side effects reported to the FDA.

One of the effects of yohimbe is to vasodilate (widen) blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure. Those with low blood pressure can therefore experience yohimbe side effects.

Yohimbine cream may also alter the way the body eliminates water, so those with kidney problems may experience yohimbe side effects.

Other Serious Yohimbe Side Effects

There is also evidence that yohimbe creams and yohimbe tablets may cause the following yohimbe side effects: promotion of prostate enlargement (BPH), neurotransmitter imbalance (those with depression or anxiety may be at greater risk), changes in heart rhythm, painful prolonged erection, and muscle paralysis.

Are there alternatives to yohimbe creams and products?

There are much safer and more effective options than yohimbe and other yohimbine products for erectile dysfunction, low libido and its other health applications.

For this reason we see no reason to use yohimbe creams and tablets since there are so many serious yohimbe side effects to contend with.
