Why Cymbalta Might Be The Wrong Drug For You

Cymbalta is the brand name of a prescription drug called duloxetine HCl, manufactured by Eli Lilly. It is prescribed to treat a number of health conditions, including major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety (GAD), diabetic pain, fibromyalgia and chronic lower back and osteoarthritic pain.

Although it can be effective for many patients, it can also cause some very troubling side effects.

As with any medications you are taking or advised to take, you should make sure you are aware of any and all potential complications that may arise.

You may not be a good candidate for the drug, and you may be better off with a non-drug alternative.

Cymbalta Side Effects and Information

Cymbalta is similar to another drug called Effexor, in that it acts to balance two chemicals thought to play a role in depression: serotonin and norepinephrine. Other popular medications such as Prozac and Zoloft act on serotonin only.

Although these prescription drugs can help alleviate the symptoms of various depressive disorders, their effects are only temporary and unfortunately once you stop taking them the depression returns. It's not a solution.

More troubling however, is that Cymbalta side effects may cause serious health problems, and you may be worse off taking it than you would be otherwise.

Let's take a look at the potential adverse reactions Cymbalta could cause. This is taken directly from their official web site:

The most common problems: nausea, dry mouth, constipation, fatigue, decreased appetite, increased sweating, dizziness, and muscle weakness. Cymbalta and tiredness are commonly linked.

According to the prescribing information, patients with major depressive disorder "may experience worsening of their depression and/or the emergence of suicidal ideation and behavior."

As such they urge that patients are closely monitored since suicidal thoughts can be one of Cymbalta side effects.

This is actually the subject of a 2012 revived court case involving the failure of Eli Lilly to warn of increased risk of suicidal thoughts for those taking Cymbalta. The parents of a teenager named Peter Schilf who committed suicide while taking the drug several years ago have been granted permission to sue the drug company.

Increased anxiety, agitation, mania, irritability and hostility have also been observed.

Another potential worry are sexual problems, and abnormal orgasms, ejaculatory problems, erectile dysfunction and a decrease in sex drive have all been reported.

In addition to Cymbalta and tiredness, cardiac problems, gastrointestinal disorders, liver problems and kidney/urinary trouble are all possible adverse reactions to this antidepressant.

So what's the answer?

While these pharmaceutical antidepressants do provide relief to millions of people suffering from depression, potential side effects cannot be ignored.

Fortunately, there are natural alternatives for treating depression that can be just as effective, without Cymbalta side effects and those of other potentially harmful medications.
